Sunday 22nd September
This morning we set of from Bath
for a 300 k drive to Falmouth in Cornwall. We took the M4, it has an eight lane
dual carriageway and a 120k speed limit. Each time we’ve driven on the
motorways we can’t believe how many lorries & CARAVANS there are on the
road….you really wouldn’t believe it. The motorway system seems very well set
out with everyone driving in the correct lanes & every junction numbered…on
traffic reports they don’t talk about traffic jams but refer to queues &
are able to say for example, that there are heavy queues on the M4 between
junction 21 & 22…at times when there is a bad accident they close a section
of motorway between one or two junctions.
After 3 hours we drove into
Falmouth at about 12:30pm and were astounded to see the whole place shrouded in
fog. We drove out to the point where the guide book reports the view is
spectacular but we couldn’t see a thing and the really weird thing is that the
fog was seeping though the top of the trees onto the road…you could actually
see it rolling down! It was the middle of the day and 20 degrees for goodness
sake! When we checked into the beautiful guest house that will be ‘home’ for
the next three nights our hosts Clive & David told us that it’s sea
mist…quite unusual at this time of the year and let us know that we’d be
hearing fog horns quite regularly to warn the boats and shipping in the
area.
We decided that it was pointless
doing any sight seeing so we decided to linger over lunch at ‘Rick Stein’s
Fish’ in Falmouth Harbour…it isn’t one of his fine dining restaurants and they
don’t take bookings…luckily there was a spot for us. I went for the ‘Fizz and
Chips’ that included a glass of chilled Prosecco, a perfect companion to the
classic fish & chips. We both had cod and chips and they were GREAT.
Perhaps you won’t be surprised
when I tell you that we decided to take advantage of the special 2 course offer
and had dessert as well…oh dear…our waistlines are expanding! The desserts were
scrumptious…we shared one sticky toffee pudding & another of sunken
chocolate fudge cake, both served with the most amazing clotted Cornish cream.
I’ve made Andrew promise that we’ll have a very light dinner tonight.
After lunch we had a stroll up and
down the very long harbourside main street of Falmouth…and looked at what we
could see through the fog/sea mist…there were hundreds of boats moored at
marinas but one HUGE and very luxurious motor vessel caught our eye, the ‘Rasselas’
and when we got back to our room we ‘Googled’ it & here’s what we found…
click on the link and perhaps dream about how life on the high seas could be…
At about 6.30pm after unpacking
and organizing our washing (Clive & David offered to do it for us, free of
charge!) we made the ten-minute walk down to the town center to find something
for dinner. The sea mist was REALLY rolling in. We decided on a bowl of seafood
chowder at a pub called the ‘Harbour View’ and ordinarily it would have a
spectacular view but all we could see was fog! We’re back in our room now and
all set for the first episode for this season of Downton Abbey…I can’t wait.
Last but not least…a big thank you
to everyone who sent lovely messages of congratulations on our wedding
anniversary xx
